Tips for Cleaning Window Glass
As the warming light slowly inches into your room and quietly wakes you from your slumber, nothing can tarnish your morning as quickly as greeting the world through dusty and dirt covered windows. And wiping down your windows with paper towels will leave you gazing through smudged panes sooner than you’d desire. Fortunately, after following these tips your windows will sparkle for months to come.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the weather can affect your streak-free shine just as much as your method. You will want to avoid cleaning your windows in direct sunlight as the heat will evaporate the water quicker and can cause streaks. Also, avoid very cold days. The low temperature can cause the water to freeze to the pane before you can wipe it off.
Next, ditch the paper towels. Wet paper towels can fall apart, leaving you having to pick flecks from your already cleaned windows. A cotton cloth is your best choice for soaping up your windowpanes as they won’t leave bits of fiber behind. And there’s no need to buy expensive commercial cleaners when household products can leave your windows shimmering for cheap. A squirt of dish soap in a bucket of water will remove the dirt without the use of harsh chemicals. You will want to scrub your window panes thoroughly; and pay extra attention to the edges, where most of the dust and dirt will be. If necessary, use a scraper to remove any large debris.
There’s a reason professional cleaners use squeegees to wipe windows clean. It’s because it is the fastest and most effective way to ensure a streak-free shine. If you want your windows to sparkle then the squeegee will be the most important part of your window cleaning repertoire. After scrubbing off the dirt from your window, use the squeegee to wipe away the suds. Start from the top of the pane and work your way down in a side to side pattern. After every stroke, wipe the squeegee blade clean with a rag. Make sure to dry off any leftover water on the edges of the window with a clean cloth. Don’t forget to wipe down the window sill to make sure you don’t get water damage.
Over time rain can leave mineral stains that cannot be cleaned with normal methods. For these it is best to use either No. 000 steel wool and the cleansing powder Barkeeper’s Friend. Mix the powder into a paste and rub onto the stains with a wet cloth. Then carefully scrub with the steel wool, rinse, and squeegee clean. To permanently protect from mineral stains, apply a glass protectant after cleaning. Then the protectant will shield the windows but it does need to be reapplied after each cleaning.
It’s as simple as that. Follow these window cleaning tips and you can start your morning taking in the beauty of the world through spotless windows.
