The Monmouth County homeowners wanted the 1980’s master bathroom converted into a brighter, trendier four-fixture bathroom with a large comfortable shower, private water closet, and an upscale double vanity. The bathroom remodel was a part of other renovations including the reconfiguration of the master bedroom and walk-in closet. The redefined space allocated for the new master bathroom was one third less than the original.

These clients had just purchased a 1960’s center hall colonial on a quiet cul-de-sac in Morris County, NJ.  While the overall layout of the home, wooded property, and quiet street were what they were looking for, the master bath area did not suit their needs.

The Design Build Planners design and develop many master bedrooms for both new space and remodels. One of the development steps involved is the client filling out the DBP Project Profile Checklist. This form helps with the customization of the project for the preferences, styles, and needs of the individual person or family. Wish list desires are addressed. “Must have” and “do not want” items are noted. Very common on the must have side for today’s master bathroom is more storage and better organization. Typically this request is addressed through the effective use of vanities, wall cabinets, shower niches, towel cubbies, hooks, and racks.

What is on Your Master Bathroom Wish List?

In the 80’s and 90’s the term “master bathroom” had a standard of expectation that included five fixtures: two sinks, a toilet, a shower, and a jetted tub built into a tiled deck. During that period almost every upscale new single home, townhome, and condo were designed with this master bathroom. The minimum area required to reasonably fit all five fixtures is 80 square feet. Roomier ones exceed 100 square feet. At the same time, a master bathroom upgrade was a popular request for many in homes built earlier. Often the remodeling work would include stealing some space from a bedroom or a closet to achieve the room required.
