Architecture: Split Level Style Homes

Split Level Style Homes were found in the Midwest and East in the 1950’s. They gained popularity in the middle 20^th century. The suburbs were expanding at this time. They were built to accommodate every activity a family enjoyed. These homes have a main level, upper level, and they usually have a basement.

The main level is the level that has the entryway to the inside of the home. This is the area you will find the main living quarters such as the living room and kitchen. This level also contains two sets of stairs. One set of stairs leads to the upper level of the house while the second set lead to the basement if the house has a basement. The top level of the home is where the bedrooms are located.

A large estate home, Tudor style, in the UK. Tudor style homes came from the techniques used in the medieval era. In the 1920’s people around America caught on to these types of homes and the style grew in popularity. Tudor Style Homes remain popular in the suburbs. They are known by many other names. A few of the names they are known by are Storybook Style, Cotswold Cottage, and Ann Hathaway Cottage to name a few.

You will usually see these homes with stucco, brick, or stone siding. They often place a chimney near the front door. The chimney will be constructed of brick or stone. The roof is steep with cross gables. A gabled roof is the kind of roof you usually see kids draw. Gable refers to the triangular wall between the edges of the roof. Casement windows with small panes are popular with this type of house. A casement window is the kind that has hinges on the side and they open outward. A Tudor style home is usually equipped with dormer windows. These windows are located on the roof of the house. They are placed there as a source of ventilation or light on the top floor. It contains small arched doors instead of the typical door you will see in a house.

A ranch style home is simple. It is like the old saying, there is more than meets the eyes when it comes to this type of home. A traditional ranch style home is only one story. After World War 2, ranch style homes met the need for the soldiers returning home and their families. These ranch style homes were constructed of metal, but that was only for a brief time when Lustron Homes was popular. Later on the material changed. There is also split-level ranch style homes. The first ranch style home was built in the 1920’s. Nine out of every ten homes built were ranch style homes by the 1950’s.

History

The Queen Ann Style began in Britain. It was made popular in the 1870’s by George Devey and Norman Shaw. They continued two decades into the twentieth century. Queen Anne Style homes are designed different depending on what part of the world you are in. Some of the older Queen Ann Style Homes had gargoyle statues which you see in many older horror movies. They have many shapes and sizes. They are all elaborate and very well decorated. A Queen Ann Style Home is asymmetrical. It has a steep roof with an irregular shape. The roof will look like a steeple which is a unique feature on most Queen Ann Homes. The roof is usually is usually constructed with slate or wood.This style home will usually be found in a historic section of town.

The Prairie Style Home is still popular. You will find this type of home in the Midwestern United States. There’s two styles of Prairie Style Homes. These two kinds are boxy and low-slung. A boxy Prairie Style Home is symmetrical while the low-slung is balanced. The first Prairie Style Home was designed in 1893. It was devised by an architect by the name of Frank Lloyd Wright in suburban Chicago. Wright worked with Louis H. Sullivan. Sullivan also mentored Wright. Wright left Sullivan’s firm in 1893 to start his own architecture business. This was when Wright designed the Prairie Style Home. He wanted the home to be organic. In other words, he wanted the home to be constructed of natural materials, unlike the many modern homes that are made from man-made materials. Most modern Prairie Style Homes are no longer built like when Wright started.

Gothic Revival Style Homes became famous in America in the early 1800’s and stayed popular up to the late 1800’s. These houses are easy to spot. They have features that are unique to only that type of home. This style of home can be found in several countries throughout the world. This style of home was designed similar to the castles you would find in the medieval times. These homes are usually found in the rural regions of the countries. Many people are preserving these homes, but they are having to use different materials. They are using modern materials to build new Gothic Revival Style homes and maintain the older ones since the materials are no longer as accessible as they were at that point in time. Most homes that were this style were built in the Northeast when they were introduced to America. This style of home has other names such as Jigsaw Gothic, Victorian Gothic, and Neo-Gothic.

American soldiers that were serving in Europe during World War I liked the houses in the French countryside. There was a postwar housing boom. During this boom, French Provincial Style Homes began popping up throughout the suburbs in the United States. The design originated in the mid-1600’s. It became popular once again in the 1920’s then again in the 1960’s.

It is called an American Bungalow Style Home, but you would be surprised to learn they were popular in India as well. In India, they are called bangala or bangla. The bungalow style homes in India were single family homes. The British Colonists were the first people to build this type of home upon their arrival to America. These were to be summer homes for the British. It is thought that they were inspired by British cottages and army tents. The houses had a central living area. Other rooms were clustered around the central living area. These areas are bedrooms, a dining room, a bathroom, and a kitchen attached to the central living area. The American Bungalow Style Home is a two story house while the ones in earlier times were single story homes.

History

Victorian Style Homes date back the late 19^th century. At this time, American architects were looking for new ways to construct buildings. They had new technology at this time as well. The technology allowed them to mass produce materials for the homes. They became famous in 1875. They stayed popular through the turn of the century. These homes are a mixture of several different styles. There aren’t two of these homes that are alike. They each have their own unique design. This style got its name because they were being built during the reign of Queen Victoria. There was a population growth during the popularity of these homes. They were for all classes of people. However the upper class and the middle-class households usually had a place for a servant. Victorian Style Home designs depended on the region you were in. They range in size. The ranges are from one story cottages all the way to three story buildings. Many of the Victorian homes you see today will be two or three stories.

Traditional style homes are the most common style in the United States. These homes are elegant homes. They are popular in upper-class communities. They are a mix of several different styles. It makes them easier to customize since there is no right particular way to design them. The designs are generally straightforward. While there is a mix of several different designs, there is also some basic features that are consistent with this style of home. These homes are usually one story floor plans. However, it isn’t rare to see lofts or extra rooms on a second story in these homes. The houses are generally constructed of brick or wood. People of all ages like the Traditional Style Home. They are also referred to as American House or American Style floor plans.
