Retro Interior Design is making use of many of the designs from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s to create a new and exciting design philosophy that is quickly taking hold as one of the most popular theories in the market today.

Drawing it’s inspiration from the designs of past years, retro interior design provides a glimpse into the eclectic mind with it’s often funky and bold design elements. Chandeliers in the shape of spheres, ovens that have two side by side compartments, and chairs that break the mold on what most other designs have deemed as classic interpretations of the chair are all regular mainstays in a retro designed room.

It is easy to see the appeal in a retro interior design as often the room utilizes bold colors that draw attention to a certain aspect of the room. Retro Interior Design uses these colors as a way to make specific objects the focal point of a room. Perhaps an entire room is painted in shade of gray with light and steel blue furniture. This can make a room feel cold and sometimes unwelcoming, but retro interior design can change that quickly by adding a splash of orange to something as simple as couch cushions or perhaps a vase. These small details quickly are able to make a room seem more inviting.

While it is not unheard of for other designs to use photography, retro is unique in it’s use of photography of actors from years past. Prominent in these designs are people like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and many other actors and actresses that have become the face of their acting generation. Often, these photographs are quite large and placed together in such a way that they can dominate an entire wall. This is another way that retro interior design utilizes non-traditional objects to create a focal point in a room.

Retro Interior Design as a result has a smaller, but very devoted group of people who admire and implement it. As it is definitely a more eclectic collection of design elements, it takes a keen eye to make a retro interior design come together and work in a room or home.

In all, retro interior design, when utilized tastefully, can make a room feel open, welcoming and warm. It can take these eclectic pieces and turn them into a cohesive design that speaks to the nature of the owner of the home. If you are considering retro interior design, consider your personality and whether or not these types of designs fit with who you are.
