Pricing Variables in Home Addition Projects

Remodeling estimates or quotes are often highly variable from remodeler to remodeler. As you can see in this post, square footage pricing is a poor barometer to judge by. It’s important to know exactly what is being quoted and why projects in different areas can come in at different price points. Read below to find out what DBP said in response to the question:

“Rough estimate for a 1 story extensions on a slab that is 18×14. Possibly 9-10’ ceilings.”

The estimate can vary up to 30K! There are many factors to consider, including, but not limited to:

  • foundation type
  • grading of the property
  • demolition required to the existing home: structural walls, patching, siding, roofing, foundation
  • remodeling to existing home to create access and transition – flooring, walls, painting, electrical, plumbing
  • brand, style and amount of windows and doors
  • roofing and siding brand and style
  • painting and staining
  • stairs
  • decks, patios, walkways
  • attic access
  • heating and air conditioning
  • electric service panel changes and/or upgrades
  • lighting
  • flooring material
  • trimwork
  • upgrades such as fireplace, skylights, vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, built-ins…etc.
  • plumbing related projects, most notably kitchen, bathrooms and laundry.
