These Monmouth County, New Jersey homeowners wanted to create a space that would provide a shady retreat in their southern-facing back yard. The end result is a true outdoor living space over 500 square feet in size, including separate eating and entertaining areas, a gas fireplace, a TV, porcelain floor, French door, and custom Board and Batten ceiling.
Our goal was to design and build a space that would be an extension of the clients’ style and home’s interior design. We wanted to ensure there was enough space to relax after a swim and sit down to eat with sufficient shade. Finally, we included one solid wall to dampen the sounds from a neighbor’s basketball area set off the corner of their home.
The clients’ master bedroom is above the roof line of the portico. We did not want them to see a standard flat roof system when looking out their windows. Based on the home’s proximity to the shore, the structure needed to be designed and built to New Jersey hurricane codes.
We used a Pella hinged patio door, Azek trim, Perma-Cast Columns, Schluter-DITRA underlayment, GAF roof shingles, and an FMI Alpine ventless outdoor fireplace.
The final result is a true extension of the home. Their outdoor retreat is now complete with this sitting area. The initial design was intended for summer use and the fireplace to create ambiance. Based on the efficiency of the fireplace and the “cozy” feel of the room, the clients are able to use the space well into the fall months and even hosted a Super Bowl party there!
The project was designed, and developed by the Design Build Planners. The craftsmanship was by Mark of Excellence, a DBP Preferred Remodeler.
