These Middlesex County, New Jersey homeowners wanted to revamp their entire first floor. The central focus of this remodel was achieving a “killer kitchen” along with upgrades to the dining room and office. The Design Build Planners created designs for the kitchen PLUS remodel in Monroe Township along with designs for a master bathroom to be done at a later date. To the right is a dollhouse overview of the project.
The scope of the project is as follows:
Kitchen
- Demo Kitchen as needed
- Remove pantry closet and extend laundry room wall to create a mudroom
- Install pocket door at new wall
- Remove closet in the mudroom and build a bench with wall panels and hooks
- Widen kitchen window, cut down to counter, and raise to 8′ at header
- Relocate new farm sink and dishwasher to center under window
- Decorative valence at window
- Extend cabinets along the laundry wall and move the gas for a new 30″ cooktop with stainless hood
- Dry bar area between refrigerator and wall oven
- Angled and full depth pantry storage
- 6’6″ island with seating for two—single tier
- 42″ wall cabinets with trim to the ceiling. Stack angle cabinets in the corner
- Granite tops on main runs, island, and knee wals
- Install new lighting package including 6″ recessed lights, 4″ at sink, pendant and table lights
- Install counter depth refrigerator and wall oven/micro combo on garage wall
- Tile Floor
- New base and window and door casing
- Enlarge sink window width
Dining Room
- Add crown and upgrade the base molding
- Frame opening to the entry
- Reposition lighting as needed for table location
Office
- Desk with built ins behind it featuring drawers, closed storage, and open shelves
- 6″ Recessed Lighting
- Mount TV near audio components
- Add crown and upgrade base molding
- Hang guitars on the wall
Master Bathroom (Phase Two)
- Demo bathroom to stud and subfloor
- New vanity design with double sink and drawer storage
- Single mirror with flanking wall sconces
- Toilet in same location
- Remove tub and deck; install free standing soaking tub
- Recessed light over tub
- Enlarge shower
- Bench seat
- Tall niche
- Rain head with hand held unit
- Feature tile wall
- Tile on floor and walls to the ceiling
- Glass enclosure
- Two recessed lights
- Tile floor and 4′ tile on non wet walls with a feature strip

The homeowners drew their inspiration from kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects featured on Houzz.com. The design options are a result of homeowners online research combined with an in-home consultation with Design Build Planners. There is also a proprietary profile checklist that homeowners fill out that depicts their lifestyle and room use. After compiling this information, Design Build Planners incorporates their construction knowledge and design creativity for the space with a focus on the budget and overall investment.
