The Scotch Plains, New Jersey homeowners are currently living an apartment in New York, but couldn’t pass up the great deal they got on their new home in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. However, at the same time, they know they need to do some major renovations in their home, but weren’t quite sure how to start. They hired Design Build Planners to create designs for their interior remodeling project.
Thus, the homeowners were presented with three different packages. Plan 1 is known as the “Robust” package. Plan 2 is known as the “Modest” package. Finally, Plan 3 is known as the “WOW” package. Plan 1~ ROBUST:
Bathroom
- Remodel bathroom in the same footprint
- Change to a single sink vanity. Vanity same width, sink centered
- One center mirror, new owner-supplied frameless glass door
- Polished concrete floor throughout
- Tile shower walls to ceiling
- Corner bench seat
- Niche in shower
- Tile backsplash knee wall behind sink
- Ceiling mounted lights at sink
- Recessed lights and exhaust fan
- Optional owner supplied-battery operated wall sconce
Kitchen
- Extend Kitchen into the dining area to the window
- Remove partition wall for more open design
- Polished concrete floors throughout
- Relocate washer and dryer (see lower level notes)
- Single tier island with gas range and roof vent exhaust
- Unfitted design cabinetry with open shelves on window wall
- Sink in same location
- Pendant and recessed lighting

Lower level
- Remodel bathroom in same footprint
- Tile for shower walls and vanity splash only
- Closet becomes a linen closet
- Washer and dryer in enclosed in cabinetry with a side 30-36” cabinet (so about 8’ total) with a laminate counter on top. 18” wall cabinetry above from bathroom wall to window
- Polished concrete floors for all
- Bedrooms and closets and windows stay the same but remodeled
- Four recessed lights in larger bedroom
- Doors and trim painted white

- Reuse same vanity and sinks…install them higher
- Single ceiling mounted light

- Reduced cabinetry

Lower level
- Stack washer-dryer in hall closet – new wider door
- Coretec plus flooring in all but bathroom

Plan # 3 ~ WOW Package (changes from Plan # 1)
Bathroom
- Install new double vanity on the door wall (opposite the shower) and hold to the to left corner
- Barrier free floor entry to shower
- Whole opening to shower to be glass with the hinged door access closer to the toilet
- The shower head on toilet wall to become a hand-held spray
- Dual bench seats
- Add a rain head
- Tile the shower ceiling
- 4’ high wall tile on all walls outside of shower
- Glass door to toilet area
Kitchen
- Increased cabinetry with glass doors in lower-wall cabients
- Relocate range to exterior wall and vent hood through wall
- Change window over and to the left of the range to fixed glass
- Stained trim
- Prep sink in island
- Counter top wraps island sides

Lower Level
- Wall tile 4’ high outside of the shower

The homeowners style preferences were for a modern look. They drew their inspiration from finished basement projects featured on Houzz.com. The design options are a result of homeowners online research combined with an in-home consultation with Design Build Planners. There is also a proprietary profile checklist that homeowners fill out that depicts their lifestyle and basement usage. After compiling this information, Design Build Planners incorporates their construction knowledge and design creativity for the space with a focus on the budget and overall investment.
