This is AnnahMarie.
Today, Organic Gurlz Gardens of Fort Wayne, Indiana will be sharing information about why Gluten Can Be Hazardous To Your Health.
Have you ever experienced a cough after consuming a cone of soft serve ice cream? Have your allergies been acting out of control lately?
Don’t worry, it is not an infection; but it may cause injuries to your health if consumed in vast quantities.
This mysterious “thing” is gluten.
What is gluten?
While gluten may sound ominous, the side effects are not quite straight forward. Many experience “the cough” after consuming wheat or ice cream. Also, consuming gluten tends to “allow” allergies to creep into your system.
While wheat, ice cream, and other products containing gluten are not wholly “dangerous”, it is best to take the necessary precautions.
Of course you don’t have to go “bonkers” over gluten as my mommy (Becca, pictured right) would say, but it is beneficial for the body to be mindful of the ingredients in your dishes. However, if you suffer from Celiac disease, yes go bonkers and completely avoid gluten!
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Two and one-half million Americans are un-diagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications.
While gluten is responsible for most allergies, here are a few ways we at Organic Gurlz Gardens steer clear of gluten at home and restaurants:
The label tells all:
We at Organic Gurlz Gardens read the nutrition fact label on the back of a food product. If the allergy warning includes wheat, it most likely contains gluten or trace amounts of gluten.
Also, if the label says something along the lines of, “Made in a facility that produces….” it is best to stay away from these culinary ingredients as well.
More vegetables, less processed and “diet” food.
Consuming foods from the freezer isle with the reputation of being “diet” friendly can contain large amounts of gluten.
Hearty foods from the Earth are the best foods to consume when trying to avoid the menacing gluten. Even if we do eat a piece of whole grain bread, we always chase it with a few broccoli leaves or some collard greens.
It is hard to beat the greens and veggies!
Skipping the gluten at restaurants:
It is difficult to not consume gluten when at a restaurant. Here are a few tips from Becca.
- Look for a “gluten-free” section or notations on the menu.
- Talk with the restaurant owner. It is a simple step you can take to eliminate the chances of receiving gluten in your dish.
- Order food on the “greener” side. Eating soups or salads are a great start for not digesting gluten.
