One of the most popular requests in any kitchen remodel is for a gorgeous, central kitchen island. Kitchen islands come with a lot of different choices, from countertop material, one tier vs two tier, color scheme, etc. However, another important choice that many homeowners opt for is having a cook top in their kitchen island.

A cook top a cooking unit, usually with hot plates or burners, built into or fixed on the top of a kitchen surface. When examining cook tops in kitchen islands, the homeowner has many choices to consider.

Price

Basic burners can be as low as $300, but more “pro-style” gas or induction cooktops can range as high as $2,500.

Size

Most widths you will find will either be 30 or 36 inches, but custom cuts may vary.

Burner Styles

The least expensive cooktops typically feature four basic gas or electric coil burners. The next step up is the easier-to-clean glass-top electric or sealed-burner gas.

At a higher price point, gas cooktops will feature seamless grates that combine to form a level work surface, making it possible to slide pots from one burner to another.

At the highest end of the spectrum are state-of-the-art induction burners, which heat up fast, use less energy and are easy to clean thanks to a smooth ceramic top.

Venting

One must consider if there is an overhead exhaust or a model with it’s own downdraft system must be purchased.
