Our clients wanted their unfinished basement to be an extension of their main home and serve the purposes of entertaining for parties, relaxing as a family as well as a place for their daughter to explore her creativity. In addition, a powder room, an exercise room and storage were on the must-have list.
Working around the central stairs of a typical colonial home, we were able to design a sitting area with a ventless gel-fueled fireplace, wet bar, TV area and craft space. The client expertly chose a muted wall color with a deep wood floor to make the space look as large as possible, then used the blue palate provided by the thin glass tile on the fireplace wall to create an array of accent colors for the walls, furnishings, and accent pieces.
In addition to the fireplace under the stairs, some additional unique features of the basement include an extended bottom step from now open staircase to enlarge the landing area, an arched lighted niche in the wet bar, and a 96” tall door under the stairs to maximize the access to the storage. Instead of boxing in the HVAC ductwork, the design called for painting them black to feel industrial and compliment the neutral walls. In the gym, the storage area is enclosed with full length curtains to provide easy access to storage while being more cost effective then a multi-door system.
Lastly, the LED under bar lighting can set the mood for any party they host!
This newly created additional space fits the definition of “multi-use” space perfectly, and fits the needs of the clients and their family!
