The majority of Asparagus sold fresh is the green variety, but white asparagus sometimes can be found in stores. White Asparagus is more tender than the green variety, and has a lighter, milder flavor.
While they are fairly rare in the United States, White Asparagus is common in Northern Europe. They are sometimes called the “Royal Vegetable.” Hail the mighty King of vegetables!
YES, the Organic Gurlz do grow white asparagus in their raised bed garden locally and organically in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
At Organic Gurlz Gardens, we believe in healthy eating. Asparagus can also be purchased canned or pickled. Canned Asparagus contains a tad bit more salt and tends to have a much softer texture than Asparagus cooked fresh. Pickled Asparagus is packed in a salty and acidic brine, which gives it a slightly tangy flavor. Pickled Asparagus sometimes is labeled as “marinated” Asparagus. Other spices and herbs are sometimes added to pickled or marinated Asparagus.
At Organic Gurlz Gardens, we grow (And you can to!) a wide variety of Asparagus.
Asparagus can be frozen and is often a component of frozen stir fry mixes. Because Asparagus is quite hearty in texture, it holds up quite well to freezing and provides a great deal of texture without becoming soppy and mushy.
Asparagus are an excellent source of potassium, B Vitamins, and Fiber. Asparagus is low in calories, sodium, fat, and contain no cholesterol. They are also prized for diuretic qualities and help fight off cancer.
In combination with other veggies or beans, you will find you have just the type of diet that consistently reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease!
Asparagus is awesome! You go, veggie!
